The usage of social media on public relations regarding #GenderBasedViolence.
Gender-based violence is any physical abusive behaviour towards either male or female, old or young. In most cases women are often victims of GBV than men. South Africans are trying to avoid these actions while other pointers are fuelling the matter more. Social media usage is one of the most influential tools in this matter, Public Relations Practitioners should be aware of what they engage in this sensitive matter since they use social media a lot.
Social media has some more advantages towards the gender-based violence matter. There are some social media campaigns that have impacted positively towards this issue, with the influence of certain Public Relations agencies and social media influencers. We had trends like #WomenLivesMatter, #Notinmyname and many hashtags that managed to raise awareness and condemning gender-based violence. Even certain organisations shared tips on how to treat victims of GBV
Disadvantages of social media towards the gender-based violence may be to bully victims who are trying to speak out and seek justice for themselves. As a Public Relations Practitioner, you should look out for these kind of issues as some complaints may be related to or against the brand you represent. Also, a PR should keep tabs on what the brand’s social media manager is engaging in as matters like these (GBV) are sensitive, one wrong comment or remark might tarnish the name of the company/organisation.
Gender-based violence is a sensitive
issue and one needs to be careful how they engage about it. Even though PR
practitioners want their brand to participate in condemning such an issue using
social media, I advise that they practice patience and see how the public and
law officials views it as some social media posts are just publicity stunts,
involvement to such might look bad on the brand’s image. The public Relations agencies can also
use social media platform where they can display a story which can empower the public
to fight against gender-based violence.
